Supporting the Ellendale Fire Protection District is a large part of what the Ellendale Fire Auxiliary was created to do. Most of the members are wives and family members of a current or past fireman and are familiar with the risks and joys of being a part of this great organization.
When the pagers fire, the firefighters rush to their equipment, suppers go on hold, phone calls are cut short, and quick prayers are whispered for the safety of everyone. Sometimes the firefighters are out for extended periods of time fighting grass fires or larger structure fires, this is when the Auxiliary gets to scramble and throw together sandwiches and coffee to keep the guys going through the long hours out on the scene. Most consider it a privilege to help in whatever way is needed. Not only do we help our firefighters but we are able to serve our community as well.
The Auxiliary is also pleased to sponsor the ice cream booth at the Dickey County Fair each summer. It is our major fundraiser each year, with proceeds going toward firefighting equipment, training equipment and other requests the fire department submits.
March is a special month for the Fire Protection District firefighters, their board members, and the Fire Auxiliary. An evening is chosen and it is the one night they gather together to celebrate. An evening of good food, camaraderie, a few short speeches and bad jokes is followed by door prizes and old fashioned games. Although the Auxiliary takes time to decorate before the festivities there is always lots of help in packing away the memories for another year.
The Ellendale Fire Auxiliary plans their meetings around current events and there are usually only about five meetings per year. The Ellendale Fire Protection District Auxiliary is a great way to be involved and support a skilled group of firefighters.
